"Smart displays sense the environment and actuate functions to enhance display visibility."
The optical performance of any display technology is governed by separate filters within the assembly that provide the balance of uniformity, brightness, contrast and colour. Enhancing the viewability of displays in high brightness (e.g. sunlight), where glare and display “washout” are common problems, is one of the major goals of the display community.
The ENDSENSE project aims to develop smart display systems with sensing and actuation functions that can respond to the environment to enhance display viewability. Due to the complex nature of interactions between the usability and within the display system, modelling of the end user requirements and the internal display structure will be used to optimise the performance of demonstrator displays in different illumination conditions.
The ENDSENSE project team consists of the following partners:
- Micro Circuit Engineering – Display Integrator
- Thin Film Solutions – Thin Film Coatings
- University of Greenwich – Multi-physics modelling
- University of Abertay Dundee – Human Factors and Metrology
The project is supported by the DTI Technology Programme under the “Smart Materials and Structures” Theme.
