Viewing displays in high ambient light conditions

Viewing LCD's under different lighting conditions affects the performance of the display. The main problem are glare and reflectance, where the sunlight washes out the display, as shown in the picture below:

To counteract this problem a bright back light would increase the light from the display, but in other environments such as low light conditions, this would be too bright. The display could be adjusted manually to compensate for the lighting conditions, but it would be desireable to automatically compensate for different lighting conditions.

There exists a need for intelligent display technology to improve the viewability of displays in high brightness environments.
